2019 Capiaux Widdoes Vineyard Pinot Noir
Russian River (Green Valley)
95pts - Wine Advocate
“…from 45-year-old Martini clone vines dry-farmed in Goldridge soils and was aged 11 months in 30% new French oak. Medium ruby, it’s deeply scented and spicy, with cranberry and rhubarb fruits plus notes of blood orange, earth, cardamom and anise. The full-bodied palate is lush, silky and layered with a kaleidoscope of spicey accents and a long, juicy finish."
92 points - Antonio Galloni
"…opens with striking aromatic presence. Succulent red cherry fruit, blood orange and cinnamon bring out brighter tonalities of Pinot fruit. Medium in body, with terrific depth, the Widdoes has a ton to offer. It is once again one of the most nuanced and complete wines in this range. "
I've had access to Widdoes Vineyard for 26 years; named for its owner, Don Widdoes, and farmed by Dutton Ranch who planted the Martini clone in 1982. The soil is quintessential Russian River Goldridge fine sandy loam. Located just West of the little town of Graton, it is a magical location for pinot noir. The fog rolls in first and burns off late in this Green Valley sub-appellation.
A dark blue/purple color with an almost opaque center radiates out to the rim with a deep purple hue. Classic Russian River cherry cola, sweet oak and dark red fruits on the nose extending to the palate: plum, cherry cobbler and dark currant fruit. Medium weight with good tannins for ageing and a rich finish.
